What You Absolutely MUST Know Before Purchasing A

UV Black Light...

There are 3 key factors to evaluating any UV black light: durability, control, and output...

Durability.

Depending on your application, durability may be a critically important consideration. For any kind of commercial or theatrical application, it's a must. Look for a metal frame... stainless steel parts... solid construction. The kind of fixture that will handle the rigors of commercial use.

Control.

If you want to control the application of your UV black light, look for a fixture with DMX capability. Using a lighting board or software, you can turn your fixture on or off, and even program interesting effects such as black light strobing, fading, or alternating colors-provided your fixture has DMX capabilities.

Output.

It doesn't matter what the application, output is the single greatest factor in your purchasing decision. Not all fixtures are created equal. There are several output variables you'll want to keep in mind...

  • Quality of output. Look for a fixture with a peak output at 365-368nm. Based on our 20 years of experience, this is where you'll get the brightest possible glow effect. UV LED, mercury vapor, and incandescent black light bulbs just don't cut it here. That's why they don't produce very bright effects. Fluorescents and metal-halides, on the other hand, produce just the right kind of output.
  • Quantity of output. The amount of output you need depends on the size of your effect, and how far away your fixture will be mounted. The farther away, the more output it needs. As a general rule, fluorescents are fine when the fixture is mounted close to the effect. For architectural or theatrical applications, long throw fixtures are the better choice because they produce so much more output.
  • Shape of output. In general, fluorescent fixtures are great for close, broad coverage. They work well overhead, or mounted on the floor for a wall wash. Long throw fixtures are great for determining a precise shape of the output-from a broad flood to a tight, narrow focus.
